Experience at Nova Biomedical
Mechanical Engineering Co-op in R&D
The following are some of the projects I worked on at Nova Biomedical, what trainings I received, and my learnings. Click the images of projects to learn more about them.
Projects
01
Vial Tip
Goal: To precisely guide liquid in a small vial to an exact location on another device, making sure liquid doesn't pool, overflow, or otherwise remain on the vial tip
Skills used:
-
Solidworks, Injection Molding, GD&T
Lessons Learned:
-
Designing a part to be made with injection molding
02
Bracket Alignment Tool
Goal: To make a tool that aligns two backets while somone assembles them to ensure they are parallel and the tops of the brackets are all coplanar
Skills used:
-
Solidworks, GD&T
Lessons Learned:
-
How to simplify a part to make it easier and cheaper to machine

03
Strip Inspection System
Goal: Program the vision system to analyze images and detect irregularities in a prototype's chemistry (overfills, underfills, dust, and misplacement)
Skills used:
-
Java, rapidly acquired and applied new knowledge
Lessons Learned:
-
New programming language of the image analysis software
-
Developed strong problem-solving, adaptability, critical thinking, and self-directed learning skills
04
Ejector Foot Force Measurement
Goal: To measure the force of the ejector foot when the product is off to see if the ejector foot is misaligned.
Skills used:
-
Solidworks,
Lessons Learned:
-
Tolerances for 3D printing
05
Z-axis Motor Force Measurement
Goal: To measure the force that the z-axis motor exerts when picking up a pipette tip
Skills used:
-
Solidworks,
Lessons Learned:
-
In-context modeling in assemblies
06
Pipettor Force Measurement
Goal: To measure the force that the pipettor uses to pick up the pipette tip
Skills used:
-
Solidworks,
Lessons Learned:
-
Simplifying parts to lower 3D printing time
Learnings
What I learned at Nova Biomedical

R&D Process
Working in a multidisciplinary setting

Product Design
Designed parts and assemblies for development support of prototypes, fixtures, and tooling

Solidworks
Refined skills for part modeling, assemblies, and drawings

Testing and Prototyping Tools
Operated various machinery in a machine shop for prototyping and Instron machine for testing

GD&T
Learned basic symbols and applications

Testing
Tested new product designs and old/current designs to identify problems
Trainings
At Nova Biomedical, I had multiple different trainings that refined some of my already existing skills and that also taught me new skills.
